Join the Czech Citizen Parliament on Media and Democracy

In 2025, CULCORC, the Culture and Communication Research Centre, will organize a citizen parliament on the role of media in democratic societies.

This citizen parliament will meet four times, in the March-June 2025 period.

We have now started our search for the 20 participants who want to join the Czech Citizen Parliament on Media and Democracy.

Citizen parliaments are democratic tools, to increase the voice of citizens, by carefully organising deliberations on a particular societal issue, and supporting citizens to formulate a number of resolutions that will contribute to the improvement of society. Citizen parliaments do not replace the democratically-elected parliament or government, but they complement and enrich them, allowing for more citizen participation.

In the Czech Republic, citizen parliaments have only been rarely used. This initiative provides an important opportunity to Czech citizens to be part of this democratic experiment.

The theme of the Czech citizen parliament is media and democracy. Participants will reflect about the role of media in strengthening Czech democracy. Issues that will be discussed are how to organise the Czech media landscape to better serve democracy, how particular media content can better support democracy, and how citizen participation can be enhanced in and through the media.

We have currently opened the call for participants to express their interest in participating. If you are interested in joining the Czech Citizen Parliament on Media and Democracy, please send an email to dr. Miloš Hroch at milos.hroch@fsv.cuni.cz. We will then add your name and email address to the list of potential participants, from which the 20 participants will be selected.

Organiser of the Czech Citizen Parliament on Media and Democracy is CULCORC, the Culture and Communication Research Centre at the Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism at Charles University, as part of the European MeDeMAP research project. CULCORC is led by extraordinary professor Nico Carpentier.
