Guest Lecture: Curating Online Communities: Solutions from Interviewing Women Gamers and Recommendations for Developers
6 November 2023, 12:30, Hollar Building, Room 112
Amanda C. Cote, Associate Professor and Director of the Serious Games Certificate at Michigan State University, will give a lecture on coping methods for managing harassment and negativity online, as well as the recommendations for developers to manage their communities and cultures more effectively. The talk Curating Online Communities: Solutions from Interviewing Women Gamers and Recommendations for Developers will draw from Cote's widely praised book Gaming Sexism: Gender and Identity in the Era of Casual Video Games (New York University Press, 2020) and should be relevant to students interested in online communities, video games, and gender.
Cote is one of the leading game scholars working on the topic of sexism in game culture, but she has also been investigating the video game industry and its precarious labor conditions such as crunch. The guest lecture will be a part of the course JKM150 Live-Streaming and Content Creation in Game Culture, but it will be open to all Charles University students and staff. It will be a great opportunity to learn more about gaming communities and the role of gender in online environments where women traditionally face sexism. Besides critical observations of discriminatory practices among players, the talk will also offer practical advice for women's coping strategies.
